A GLP-1 receptor agonist is a medicine designed to act on GLP-1 receptors. These medicines do not simply burn fat or work as stimulants. Their effects are tied to appetite regulation, digestion, and metabolic signalling. Some are used in type 2 diabetes, some in weight management, and some have additional approved uses depending on the country and product.
Semaglutide is one active ingredient in this medicine group. It is found in different branded products, and those products may have different approved uses, forms, and instructions. For example, semaglutide may be supplied as an injection or tablet, depending on the product.
Tirzepatide is closely related in public discussion but is not exactly the same as semaglutide. It acts on two hormone receptor pathways: GIP and GLP-1. Because one of those pathways is GLP-1, tirzepatide is often grouped with GLP-1 medicines in everyday language. For medical records, it is better to write tirzepatide clearly rather than only saying a GLP-1.
Why the wording matters
Precise terms help a prescriber understand what you have used, what you are asking about, and what risks may apply. I tried a GLP-1 is less useful than I used semaglutide, labelled as Wegovy, from March to June, and stopped because of nausea.
Keep treatment choices separate from terminology
These terms are educational, not a way to choose treatment. Suitability depends on medical history, current medicines, pregnancy plans, diabetes status, gastrointestinal symptoms, mental health history, and other individual factors.
